Éric Bailly on Marseille loss to Tottenham Hotspur: “We made a costly error.”
In the wake of Marseille’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur for their Champions League opener, defender Éric Bailly spoke to the press about what he saw as a game of fine margins.
The Ivorian says that he was impressed by his team’s first half performance, but that Chancel Mbemba’s red card tipped the balance of the game and made the situation difficult for the away side, as Richarlison then scored a brace.
“We’re even more upset because we could have taken home a point. We made a costly error and when you’re down to ten it’s complicated. On Mbemba’s tackle, these are decisions we make in a split second. But we were solid, we only made that error. I wasn’t surprised by our first-half performance, we’ve been working well for a week. [The work we put in] showed, we made it difficult for the opponents.”
“After the red card, we gave in. When it comes to these great strikers, it’s the details that matter, one second where you’re not concentrated. The most important thing is the positive things we showed. We lost three points but we still have cards to play.”
