Why Royal Photographers Have Trouble Shooting Meghan Markle
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle aren’t the only ones gearing up for their big day.
The couple has invited plenty of guests to their actual ceremony (a casual 1,200), however, the thousands of royal fans who cannot jet off to St. George’s have to rely on video crews and photographers to broadcast the event of the decade to the world. And, as it turns out, there is a lot of prep that goes into that.
Nobody knows this more than Shutterstock’s royal photographer Tim Rooke, who has spent the last two decades capturing the royal family on film.
Having photographed many of the royal family’s biggest events, Rooke—whom Prince Harry has nicknamed “Rookie,” thanks to his Twitter handle—has seen it all. And from his perspective, Meghan and Harry seem to have a loving relationship—which makes them particularly difficult to shoot solo.
“Ms. Markle and Prince Harry are very much in love, in fact, it’s hard for me to capture a picture of them each alone because they always either locked in each other’s gazes or joined hands,” Rooke explained. “We like to get fashion shots of what she’s wearing on these occasions, but they are often hard to get because she’s always holding Harry’s hand, making it difficult to get the full fashion shot without cropping out her arm.”
Arm crop difficulties aside, Meghan and Harry’s romance is a beautiful thing to witness. Rooke says that are a particularly affectionate royal couple, compared to even Prince William and Kate Middleton.

“I haven’t had a lot of opportunity to photograph Meghan yet. I’ve mostly only been able to capture her on big event pieces. That being said, I’ve not seen this much affection between two royals in my decades of shooting,” Rooke said. “Compared to Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, they are much more affectionate in public which could be attributed to the different pressures placed on William as the next in line to become king.”

Rooke has managed to capture beautiful moments at Will and Kate’s wedding, and will no doubt continue to do so at events going forward, though it’s worth mentioning that in general, photographing the royals is not necessarily easy or straightforward.
“You can’t always predict where the royal subjects might go at an event so it’s quite hard to anticipate the best position before the event. So much of what you photograph depends on what job you get to do,” Rooke said. “Sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you are not.”
