UPDATE (October 19, 2023, 2:40 P.M. EST): Almost a month after teasing her new back tattoo, Billie Eilish has finally revealed it to Instagram fans. The singer posted a photo dump on October 18, and you can see her abstract body art on the fourth slide.

Initially, she had only shared about a fourth of the tattoo which just looked like several thick curved lines and shapes drawn into a random pattern. The full tattoo is a mish-mash of even more abstract lines and shapes that follow the line of her spine all the way down to her lower back. The photo appears to have been taken in the midst of her getting tattooed because nothing was shaded in.

Though she's finally revealed her body art, I'm still confused as to what it is or means, if anything. Perhaps it has no real significance other than being aesthetic-pleasing to Eilish. Honestly, I want to know how long it took to complete because a spinal tattoo is painful, and this is a pretty big one. I could barely handle when my tattooer was doing mine even though only a portion of the tattoo was on my spine, and it was nowhere near as big as Eilish's. Clearly, Eilish is a trooper and likely has a much higher pain tolerance than me, so props to her.

The tattoo itch is something serious. I only started getting tattoos two years ago, and every day, I’m battling with myself to not set up an appointment. But Billie Eilish is making it hard for me because the singer just shared a teaser photo of her latest body art.

On September 21, Eilish shared a peek of her back tattoo on Instagram with the caption, “%*&+^#/,” which perfectly describes the chaotic vibe of her photo dump. Her tattoo teaser is in the very first photo, and you can see the black abstract art creeping up towards the nape of her neck from underneath her top. It's hard to describe what tattoo artist Matias Milan etched into her skin because we can't see much from this vantage point other than some unidentifiable linework. Upon seeing it the first time, I thought of those ink blots from the Rorschach test.

It's also hard to tell just how big this back tattoo is because we can only see the upper part of it. There's a chance the black ink is covering the rest of her back in a similar pattern. On the other hand, there might only be an inch of tattoo left beneath her black t-shirt. Who's to say!

Having a tiny needle scratched all over your skin isn't exactly the most relaxing process. But I can definitely confirm from personal experience that spinal tattoos provide a special kind of pain. Just looking at Eilish's new back art is simultaneously making me wince thinking about how much it hurts to get that part of your body tattooed — nevertheless, I'm feeling the temptation to call up my artist for another appointment right this minute.
