Three European Commission staffers were injured in Tuesday’s terror attacks in Brussels, which struck the city’s airport and a metro station located close to several EU institutions.

Commission Vice-President Kristalina Georgieva confirmed that the officials were among the victims of the attacks, but did not provide details about the circumstances or the extent of their injuries.

“The Commission’s staff is ready to contribute to the fight in Europe against what has become so frequently an enormous stress for our people,” said Georgieva, who handles human resources and administration for the EU’s executive body.

Georgieva said the offices of the Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development have been closed and staff are working from home. The offices are close to the Maalbeek metro station, where an explosion killed at least 20 people and wounded dozens of others.

“We are doing checks of a structural nature,” Georgieva said, to determine whether the explosion had damaged the structure of the building and made it unsafe.

“We are concerned about two things: One, the safety and security of our people; two, the ability of us to serve Europe, to do our jobs,” she said.

A spokesperson for the European Parliament said Wednesday, “As far as we know one staff member of parliament was slightly injured,” but did not provide further details.
