Boris Johnson’s charisma will open doors in Trump’s Washington but the same policy pitfalls await

When assessing how Prime Minister Boris Johnson will fare in Donald Trump’s Washington there are insights to be gleaned from his relationship with another prominent Republican: Paul Ryan. 

Mr Johnson’s attempt to woo the man who was House Speaker – the most senior Republican in the US House of Representatives – has all the hallmarks of an approach his supporters hope can now unlock Trumpland. 

Visiting the American capital in January 2017, while foreign secretary, Mr Johnson breezed into Mr Ryan’s offices at the heart of the US Capitol and turned on the charm.
