Actress Candis Cayne will continue highlighting important transgender stories—this time on another major TV show.

The activist has joined Grey’s Anatomy for Season 14 in a multi-episode storyline in which she’ll portray a transgender patient who goes to Grey Sloan for vaginoplasty surgery, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Her character is reportedly inspired by the real-life story of Hayley Anthony, a transgender woman who turned to Jess Ting, the director of surgery at the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at New York City’s Mount Sinai, create this new procedure.

“[The surgery] revolutionizes the making of a vagina and we thought that was a really cool story and Candis is playing a character inspired by something we read,” Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff told THR.

Alex Blue Davis, a trans actor, currently portrays Dr. Casey Parker, who came out as trans on the television show in Season 14.

Cayne previously starred on Dirty Sexy Money and is most recently known for her work on Transparent and I Am Cait.

Her role on Dirty Sexy Money made her the first transgender woman with a major role on primetime TV, which she discussed in an interview for Time’s Firsts series.

“It was really the first time that a trans woman played a trans role for a recurring character—and the character had heart, she was an actual character that you could develop,” she said. “Halfway through my first season, I went to an awards show, and they played a clip of me and Donald Sutherland doing a scene together. The whole room stood up and applauded. And I realized at that moment that this wasn’t just about me wanting to be an actress; this was about moving the fabric of society forward.”

Grey’s Anatomy airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
