Delio Onnis, the French top-flight’s all-time top-scorer, believes Kylian Mbappé will beat his record

Speaking in an interview with Nice-Matin, Delio Onnis, the all-time top-scorer in France’s top division, believes that Kylian Mbappé (23) will beat his record, which has stood since 1986.

Italo-Argentinian striker Onnis played for Stade de Reims, AS Monaco, Tours and SC Toulon during a 15-year spell in France’s top division. He played 278 times for Monaco, scoring 223 goals, and scored a total of 299 goals during his time in the French top flight.

He now believes that Mbappé, another player who has played for the Principality side, will beat his record. The Paris Saint-Germain striker, who earlier this year opted to remain in the France capital rather than join Real Madrid is almost halfway towards beating Onnis’ record. In 197 Ligue 1 appearances, he has scored 147 goals.

In an interview with Nice-Matin, Onnis says he believes that Mbappé may already be the best player in the world and said that should Mbappé continue to ply his trade in Ligue 1, he would expect him to beat his record, which has now stood for 36 years.

“I like [Mbappé] he is a monster. In a year he will be the best player in the world. That is already perhaps the case. I’ll be clear: if he doesn’t leave to play abroad, he will easily beat my record. My goal record is beautiful, but it isn’t what makes me live,” said Onnis.
