G1 Supercard Event at Madison Square Garden Set to Break Major Pro Wrestling Record

As noted, next year’s ROH and NJPW joint G1 Supercard event, taking place the night before WrestleMania 35 at Madison Square Garden, sold out in just 19 minutes, with only three names advertised for the event – Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and Tetsuya Naito, as well as the stars of Ring of Honor.

According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the early success of the G1 Supercard event is monumental, as ROH and NJPW stand to draw a gate in excess of $1 million, which would make the event the largest gate for a non-WWE event in The United States.

Back on September 11th, 2014, Arena Mexico held an event featuring a main event of Atlantis vs. Ultimo Guerrero in a mask vs. mask match, and that event drew $1 million, making it the previous record holder for the largest non-WWE gate in North America. As far as The United States is concerned, on January 4th, 1999, WCW aired an episode of Nitro at The Georgia Dome, and the event took in a gate of $930,735, making it the largest non-WWE gate in the Stateside.

Should the G1 Supercard show end up performing as expected, it would become the second highest grossing pro wrestling event in Madison Square Garden history, trailing only WrestleMania 20 which drew a gate of $2,401,000. Additionally, G1 was the second fastest pro wrestling event to sell out in the history of MSG, with WrestleMania 20 being the fastest.
