Gophers wrestler Gable Steveson, No. 1 in nation, begins Big Ten tournament as No. 2 seed

Gophers wrestler Gable Steveson is the top-ranked heavyweight in the country this season, but he is seeded No. 2 for the Big Ten Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Piscataway, N.J.

Minnesota coach Brandon Eggum was “surprised” to see Michigan’s Mason Parris (26-0) ahead of Steveson (12-0) in light of national rankings listing Steveson on top.

“I think any Big Ten coach (who) is voting on this would, if they had to put money down on someone, they would put it on Gable, including the top-ranked guys’ coaches,” Eggum told the Pioneer Press on Tuesday. “That is my true feelings.”

Eggum’s theory is coaches with top heavyweights tried to keep Steveson on the other side of the bracket to avoid having to face him earlier in the tournament. “You might see some jockeying there,” Eggum hypothesized. Continue reading at twincities.com
