José Mourinho looking to place himself at either Monaco or Lyon
L’Équipe report this morning that Portuguese tactician José Mourinho is seeking to place himself at a Ligue 1 club for his next destination, with AS Monaco and Lyon, not PSG, Lille or Marseille, at the forefront of his desires, according to his entourage.
The manager in question has denied an interest in either of those positions, reminding the journalists that both the clubs in question already have managers: Bruno Génésio and Leonardo Jardim. Officially, Jorge Mendes had nothing to say either.
Mourinho in fact shares an agent with Jardim, with the latter having only just returned to the Principality, which ensures that ASM is an unlikely destination for Mou.
Of the top 4 Ligue 1 clubs, Lyon seems to be the most realistic, from both a practical and cultural standpoint, with Bruno Génésio’s contract expiring at the end of the season.
Lyon President Aulas has to weigh up arguably the most stick or twist decision of his 32-year career: with the Chinese backing & previous player sales, OL could afford José Mourinho’s salary, if he’s reasonable. 1 last throw of the dice that could glorify or ruin Aulas’ legacy – the risks are considerable.
Additionally, there is more linking Mourinho & Aulas together. In 2010, the Lyon President told RMC:
“I dream of finishing my career with a really big foreign manager. I tried to bring José Mourinho in before Claude Puel. Financially, we couldn’t do it, but we might try to have this experience after Claude Puel’s time…”
