Etienne Green, 8 – Not too much he could do about the goal and kept his side in the game during the first half as he made three superb flying saves from Aouar and one key block of cross that would otherwise have meant a tap-in for Paquetá.

Timothée Kolodziejczak, 6 – Much improved after a terrible display at Monaco and made a handful of key first half challenges.

Ryad Boudebouz, 3 – For from Puel’s favourite but for those who remember his stunning form at Montpellier before he left for Spain, it makes sense to give the Algerian some creative responsibility but nothing really worked out for him here and he failed to have much tangible impact. He needs time and the manager’s faith over an extended period to have a chance of finding some form.

Denis Bouanga, 5 – A nuisance at times for Lyon but failed to produce much end product and should’ve scored when put through one-on-one in the second half. It was his effort that later led to Lopes’ red card.

Arnaud Nordin, 6 – A threat on the right in the first half as a good outlet providing a handful of dangerous crosses and it was his shot that led to Khazri’s first half header which should have resulted in a goal.

Wahbi Khazri, 5 – Played with uncharacteristic intensity and again looked keen to work hard for the team but, despite being prominent throughout, he wasted two huge headed chances, an early header against the post with the goal gaping was quite appalling. Made up for those misses to some extent by stroking home the late penalty.

LYON – 1 (Aouar 41)

Anthony Lopes, 4 – Made a important save from Bouanga but probably cost OL the win by being needlessly sent off for a handball outside his area with Bouanga’s effort probably going wide.

Léo Dubois, 5

Sinaly Diomandé, 5

Jérôme Boateng, 6 – Noticeably tired before his subbing mid way through the second half but was solid defensively and did well to block Nordin’s first half cross which would have meant a certain goal for Khazri.

Houssem Aouar, 8 – As against Brondby in the week, he again found pockets of space to create and pepper Green’s goal with shots. Green made three superb saves before Aouar finally won the battle with a beautifully shaped first half finish. At long last form is being found.

Xherdan Shaqiri, 5

Karl Toko Ekambi, 6 – Faded after half time but he was a real menace before the break, running at Camara to considerable success and providing two precise balls for Aouar who was only halted by the excellent Green on both occasions.

Lucas Paquetá, 7 – Perhaps should have scored in the first half when put through on goal but led the line superbly, doing an uncanny traditional number nine impression with some physical hold up play while bringing others into the game. A real handful.
