Runners Need To Re-Launch #recyclemyrun At Royal Parks Half 2017

Runners Need, the running specialists with 37 UK stores nationwide are proud to be appointed as the official retailer of the Royal Parks Half Marathon for a second consecutive year.

One of the UK’s most popular races, the Royal Parks Half is the perfect backdrop to re-launch ‘#recyclemyrun’, the popular initiative that encourages runners to recycle their old trainers in exchange for money off a new pair.

Challenging the ideology that unwanted clothes and shoes should be treated as rubbish Runners Need have offered a recycling service in all stores since October 2016. In that time, working with the European Recycling Company (ERC), over 1.5 tonnes of old running kit has been collected.

Runners Need will have a number of visible recycling bins positioned around the stand in the festival area, runners and spectators who donate a pair of trainers on the day will be rewarded with a £20 voucher to be used against a new pair of trainers from Runners Need, both in store and online.

For runners not taking part in Royal Parks Half the #recyclemyrun campaign will run in store Nationwide for one-month post-race, finishing on Wednesday 8th November. To find a local store to recycle your old trainers visit: www.runnersneed.com/stores

The service, and recycling bins will also remain in store indefinitely as a facility that Runners Need provides to the general public, allowing them to give their old trainers a good home and save them from heading into landfill.

Why do we treat our unwanted clothes and shoes as rubbish?

Every year over 300 million pairs of shoes are thrown out by the public in the UK, with the majority going to landfill. Recycling with ERC is the sustainable alternative to disposal and can make a big difference to the environment.

ERC is part of SOEX Group of Companies, the largest clothing and footwear re-wear and recycle company in the world, their ultimate goal is closed loop textile manufacturing.

Trainers donated throughout the course of the campaign are shipped to a 80,000sq m recycling facility in Germany where each pair are graded and exported as re-wearable footwear to over 85 countries around the world or broken down into raw materials that can be reintegrated into the manufacturing process.
