SDSU’s Walraven places eighth at the Southern Scuffle
South Dakota State’s Dustin Walraven continued his trek through the 149-pound weight class at the Southern Scuffle with another win. Walraven won 2-1 in tie breaker – 1 versus Thomas Gantt (North Carolina State). After riding out the second overtime period, Walraven scored an escape to advance to the consolation quarterfinals.
In the consolation quarters, Walraven dropped a narrow 5-1 decision to James English (Penn State). The seventh-place match was more of the same, as Walraven was bested by another Penn State wrestler in Luke Frey and by a more narrow 4-3 decision.
The place match wrapped up competition at the Southern Scuffle.
SDSU returns home for its next event, a dual versus Simpson College on Jan. 11. Former Jackrabbit assistant wrestling coach Nate Hansen leads the Storm after coaching five seasons at SDSU. Start time is set for 7 p.m. in Frost Arena.
