Vikings crack top 20, debut at No. 17
EDMOND, Okla. – Augustana jumped into the NCAA Division II Wrestling rankings at No. 17 in a Wednesday release from the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. TJ North and Jayd Docken both remained in the top eight of their respective weight classes.
Collecting 26 points, Augustana is tied with Ashland (Ohio) at 17th after receiving votes the past three releases, but not earning enough points to crack the top 20. Notre Dame (Ohio) remains the top team while three teams from Super Region 3 earned top-five billings.
A sophomore from Elk Point, S.D., North moved up one spot in the 125-pound rankings to fourth. After debuting in the polls on Jan. 3, North has remained undefeated against Division II competition and defeated previously-ranked No. 1 Alex Johns of Indianapolis at the Ranger Duals on Jan. 18.
Suffering his first loss of the season, Docken dropped one spot, checking in as the No. 5 wrestler at 197 pounds. The Winner, S.D. native owns a 10-1 record on the year with his only loss coming at the hands of No. 4 Julian Smith of McKendree.
Despite a 22-3 record, including 11-0 against Division II competition, Sean Derry fell from the 184-pound rankings after bouncing between Nos. 7 and 8 from the start of the season. Derry is currently ranked No. 3 in the Super Region 3 with Docken holding the same spot and North in possession of the top super region ranking.
Augustana closes out their home schedule with Northern State on Thursday, Jan. 30. The Vikings welcome the Wolves to the Elmen Center for a 7 p.m. dual.
