Villarreal approach for Lyon striker Moussa Dembélé rejected

Foot Mercato report this afternoon that Villarreal have approached Lyon over a potential move for French striker Moussa Dembélé, to no avail.

The 26-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the coming season, but he intends to see out his deal. As reported by Foot Mercato earlier this summer, the forward has also been the subject of interest from England, with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all keeping an eye on him this past campaign.

After a stuttering start to the season, the former Fulham and Celtic man surged into form at the turn of the year and finished the campaign on 21 league goals, although he was unable to prevent Lyon from missing out on European football altogether, with an 8th-place finish.

His return to form – after a poor 2020/21 season that saw him score just the one goal and undergo an unsuccessful loan spell at Atlético Madrid in the second half of the campaign – has meant clubs around Europe are now taking note again.

Given that Dembélé is not rushing to move away, several teams are already positioning themselves with a view towards a free transfer next summer. Lyon have not completely closed the door to a sale, given they could still bring in a transfer fee for him this summer.
